Meet Jeremy and Jessica, Iowa Weimeraner Rescue volunteers who live in northwest Iowa. Jeremy is a general manager of a manufacturing company and Jessica is a nurse practitioner. They love spending time with their dogs enjoying the Okoboji Lakes area. See their volunteer story below:
Before getting our first dog, we spent time researching different breeds. The Weimaraner’s activity level, hunting ability, and desire to be a part of the family appealed to us. Our fist Weim came from a breeder/friend when she was six weeks old. As she aged, she started to slow down and it looked like she would enjoy a companion. We searched for breeders, but happened upon a Weim rescue and decided to go that route instead. We adopted Ike (a large 2-year-old male) two years ago, and it was an amazing experience. It appeared as though he may have been abused in the past. He was very scared of men and strangers. Over time, he has improved in leaps and bounds. Now he is great with all our visitors, kids, and other dogs!
This past summer we decided to adopt a third Weim to ease the transition when our eldest dog passes some day. We wanted to make this transition while she was still healthy. We felt we needed another dog for Ike because he has separation anxiety and is much more content with a buddy. We adopted another 2-year-old male whose personality is completely opposite of Ike’s. The three dogs have made the transition and get along great!
We had such a great experience adopting from a rescue, not only once, but twice, that we wanted to get involved. We have found volunteering with Iowa Weimaraner Rescue to be very rewarding! It is amazing to see how Weim lovers who work together can save so many of the breed, and assist them in finding their forever home.
