Foster Otto watching out for his human sister at the playground! This guy is still looking for his forever family!

Meet Otto ā€“ 5 Year Old Iowa Weim Rescue Foster Dog
***Read the entire bio to see if he is a good fit for you***
Otto came into Foster late February 2024. Ottoā€™s is a ā€œbig boyā€ that once he is comfortable with you will want to be your best friend and there is no shortage of snuggles.
The following below will highlight what we know about Otto, so he is able to find the best ā€œfurā€-ever home. Overall, he has been a pretty easy dog to foster, he has been great!
About Otto
He is big and came in very overweight. He came to the rescue at 150 pounds and is now 132 pounds and starting to look much better. He needs a home where he can be walked and fed properly. He might end up being a 90ā€“100-pound dog. Thatā€™s a big boy!

Playful. Donā€™t let his size fool you, or his napping habits. When he is ready to play, especially now that he is losing weight, he is a very happy bouncy playful pup!
ā€¢ He has been around a 6-year-old during fostering and is good in terms of ā€œwantingā€ to play friendly but due to his size he has knocked her over accidentally. We highly recommend a home if children are 8+ years old.
ā€¢ He has done wonderful with our 12-year-old Weimaraner. We were told he was good with other dogs as well but has not been fully tested.
People. Otto is timid at first around people in general. He will keep his distance at first but in all cases with new people it is just ā€œtimeā€, and he will be your friend.
ā€¢ Example: Family came over and Otto kept distance and some barking. Then he was calm shortly, no barking but kept his distance. Fast forward about 2-3 hours later he hopped on the couch and snuggled the once stranger but now friend. He does this with everyone. This could go away over time with lots of positive interactions.
He does okay on walks. Recommend use a harness and front hook, and if trained can graduate to top hook. He is big, and strong, so children and elderly should not walk him in his current state.
ā€¢ Seems timid around bikes and some people on walks. Will require a tight leash.
ā€¢ If he sees another dog on a walk he will want to play with the dog, so again tight leash. When he did have a dog run up to him, he went down on front paws and wanted to play, so a positive sign he will do well with other dogs but use caution.
Otto is only allowed on our couch and will want to snuggle with you on the bed, but we currently do not let him, even if he does try to sneak up once and awhile.
ā€¢ We were told Otto has been in a kennel before, but we have not tested this.
ā€¢ Otto in his foster home when left alone, not kenneled, has been great, no issues.
Additional Details
ā€¢ Does good with nail clipping, we were able to do it each weekend. Recommend using shortest setting and having nails done bi-weekly to keep them down.
ā€¢ He is big, so giving him a bath might be tricky. Not sure how he does with water.
ā€¢ He understands some basic commands like ā€œSitā€.
ā€¢ He can be stubborn at times. i.e., ā€œOtto come hereā€ Otto then proceeds to sit and look at youā€¦ he knows what he is doing šŸ˜Š Such a goofball.
Otto is such a big lovable dog, and so sweet.

Fostered in the Twin Cities. Adoption fee $250.

I've had this breed most of my life. The best thing an owner can do is explain the breed to those who are "interested". They can be the MOST WONDERFUL things in the world, if you understand them.

Not enough Gentle Leaders in the world to keep my dogs that calm!

What our adoptees say . . .

How has a Weimaraner Rescue changed their lives?

"Alex is doing great. Traveled well with us for vacation & we actually got him to swim.

He is such a good boy & listens so well. He & Samson have become very good friends & they are both doing really well with our 1 year old too. "
Alex

Bringing Diamond into our life has been really great for our family. I have a running partner and my kids have a fun companion. Diamond has taught me to become a better leader and an even better parent, and she has taught my kids about helping animals in need and about responsibility. ā€“ Lori

ā€œWe love Diamond, she is pretty.ā€ ā€“ Maddie, 6 ā€œI love dogs, Diamond is the best dog in the world.ā€ ā€“ Miraeya 8

"Gordy is adjusting well now. Heā€™s just a great dog, and great companion.

Weā€™ve enjoyed several fun hiking and fishing trips together! We are both looking forward to this fall, getting out into the fields for pheasant and quail hunting."
