Selena πππΎ
Selena was surrounded by 3 people who loved her as she crossed the rainbow bridge this morning.
For those of you rooting for her and praying for her, thank you! She had a harder life than she deserved. But these last months she's had with us were likely some of the best she's ever had. She had the quirkiest circling behavior when she was nervous, happy, excited, confused, anything. LOL It was truly a quirk only people who loved her could love. She LOVED her friends at doggie daycare. She loved playing ball. And we loved her because she was ours to love. When no one else would. We don't take lightly that these dogs trust us to make decisions in their best interest. They trust us with everything.
We knew we caught "it" early, and she was taken to Blue Pearl as soon as she was observed with a distended stomach. X-rays were taken and then sent to radiology. Given the initial observation and the severity of her case, the vet wondered if the stomach flipped a full 360 degrees. Radiology requested additional x-rays of the esophagus. Those were taken. It didn't appear to be blocked on the film, but the distention was so severe. The recommended next step was to see if they could even get a tube down her throat and also allow them to remove some gas as it was a concern that her stomach may rupture. They were able to remove some gas/fluid but she almost immediately filed back up. Even sedating her to do this was a concern as she was not stabilized. The vet said, "This is an ER, we get bloat cases all the time. But this is unusual." It happened fast, and yes, bloat happens fast, but this was unusually fast.
Why do I give so many details (and this isn't even all of them) about the awful decision we were faced with? Because so many people had opinions about what they know of bloat. "They should have done surgery immediately." "Why did they wait?" Not all dogs who bloat can be saved. That's the reality.
There was no waiting, there is a process to make sure you're making the right decisions for the dog in front of you, you can't just cut a dog open with no game plan. And if you're doing that, it's not in the best interest of the dog. The vet expressed to us how grave and critical Selena's case was. Since the case was so unusual, the next step would have been exploratory surgery to uncover what was causing such severe distention. To jump into surgery without really even understanding what was going on, wasn't the answer for us. If surgery would have given her a fighting chance, we would have done it. We could have done surgery, if nothing else, to give ourselves as humans, the answers we think we deserve. The chances of her making it through surgery were not great, they weren't even good. You don't just put a dog through surgery just so you can say you tried to save them. It's not fair.
She deserved to have people who loved her with her in her last moments. Not to die in surgery without them. The people who loved her deserved to be with her in those moments. And they were. ... See MoreSee Less
Bloat is horrible and painful to the dog. Most dogs do not survive. Age is definitely a factor. We made that hard decision when our 10.5 year old weim bloated. You made the best decision for the dog based on all of the information from the vet. Run free , Selena. I am glad you found love.
Fly high SelenaπππOur first Weim that we adopted bloated when she was 8 1/2 years old. She had surgery and we thought would be ok, unfortunately the next morning she had a bowel obstruction in addition and we ran to the ER to help her pass. Painful decisions are just that painful. So sorry for those that were with Selena too, it’s hard for everyone.
When you brought her in did they immediately give her pain medication? Just wondering because Ralph just had bloat and as soon as we got to the Vet he was given pain medication.
Thank you for being with her to the end. I know that was the most comfort you could her.π₯° Thank you for sharing the details on her case. Even though some of us have experienced bloat, there is so much to learn from a case like hers. Our first Weim bloated and was on the surgery table in 45 minutes. Four days passed and he was not getting better or worse. We made the decision to take him to Mississippi State Veterinarian School.of Medicine. The internal medicine doc said he's walking around all stout and so regal like nothing is wrong. He didn't want you to know how sick he was . Within a few minutes, he was bloating again. His stomach abcessed which lead to a three week stay in ICU. He lived another 1 1/2 years. He was our first baby and looking back 20 years ago maybe we should have done things different. We spent close to $25,000 on him and we could have adopted and saved more Weims. I share this because you can go down a deep dark rabbit hole wanting to save your Weim, but be very careful fellow Weim friends. Those medical bills pile up and you have to consider is the dog going to have a good quality of life. Our dog did have heart damage and he went deaf. His adopted Weim sister let him know when anything was happening!π₯° She kept us all on our toes! Once again, Thank you for being warriors for all these precious Weims in need!
My heart is so sad for you. I've had Weims since I was 4 years old (first one back in the 50's before anyone knew what they were)....then skipped to age 24, and have had them ever since (I'm 72 now). I KNOW how awful Bloat is and how heartbreaking it is to lose one of these incredible beauties. My Sullivan (Blue male) now14 and so dear. We can't have them forever, but I sure wish it was possible!...I SEND YOU MUCH LOVE, you gave her so much and now she's free as the wind... God Bless you all.
Poor baby π©
I am so very sorry for your loss of Selena! My heart hurts for you! God Blessπππ
I’m so sorry for the loss of this sweet girl. Thank you for showing her what true love is during her last few months on Earth and for making the best decision today for herπ
Thank you for surrounding her with love and making sure that she didn’t pass alone. Deepest sympathies for her foster family.
So very sorry that y’all were faced with this decision and that the kindest decision was to let Selena go. ππΎπΎ
My heart goes out to you! It’s so tough to lose one of our babes. Know that you did right by her, and did right for her. Doing what’s best for them and being with them at their end is the toughest thing to do, but that’s when they need us and trust us the most. My IWR Lono and I send our love and support. πΎπ
I’m a very sorry for your loss π. She was so blessed to have those who loved her with her. My heart breaks for you all ππ
RIP SWEET GIRL! I'm so sorry for your loss. Thanks for taking great care of her.
How blessed Selena was to have found such immeasurable love and stability. She is no longer suffering and is whole again. Thank you for the care and love given to this sweet girl.
Poor pupper …she is at peace and pain free . π
Selena, you will forever be in my heart. If love could’ve saved you, you’d live forever. You were, and always will be loved and missed. You touched every heart you came in contact with. You loved everyone and from the minute you came into rescue, everyone you came in contact with fell in love with you too. How blessed we all were to have you in our lives, even if for just a short bit. You’ll never be forgotten. We will meet again one day and until then, I know you’re running free, making so many new friends in Heaven. I love you always. Rest in peace sweet baby girlπβ€οΈ
I hate losing pets and I wished they could leave this world on there terms not ours .
Run free Selena. π it doesn’t take very long in our rescue for fosters to love these dogs just like their own. Sending so much love to my friends who were those people in Selenas life. These decisions don’t come lightly and they come with hearts being hurt. Thank you for your dedication β€οΈ
Sending so much love to everyone that loves Selena. I had to say goodbye to my hospice foster very suddenly recently and it is heart-wrenching. Just like my Charlotte, Selena went the best way possible surrounded by love. Thank you for giving her that last gift ππΎ
So sorry Salena & those that love her had to go through this traumatic experience. I've been there & it wasn't easy. My prayers are with you.
Sending you all hugs! We were interested in adopting Selena so it hurts to see this sad post. I hope she is running free over the rainbow bridge and her happiest, best version of herself. No doubt she felt your love in the end. I know it was a tough decision in the hardest circumstances. Thanks for all you do for the weims in your care.
Rest in peace sweet girlππ©·π
Thank you for your willingness to love her through all of it π©·
Thank you for doing everything that you could for her πΎπ
I am so very sorry, I know you did everything possible for this precious baby. RIP baby girl. β€π

We could use some prayers for foster Selena. She has bloat and it's pretty grave. She's been at Blue Pearl this morning since 7:30. Currently she's being sedated to see if any relief can be provided. She's pretty unstable and the ER doc said it's one of the most severe cases she's seen. We're not sure if surgery makes sense yet. ... See MoreSee Less
Instead of prayers -You could use a fundraiser put up on this page for surgery. Things like this are so upsetting. Why would you put this up just to upset people? Owner of weim’’s since i1973.
If Selena just bloated surgery is not necessary. Yes the gas/air needs to be relieved. Which should happen immediately. If Selena has torsion then immediate surgery if blood work comes back indicating that its not to late. To go ahead with surgery is a very difficult & personal decision.
This is weird - back when my dog bloated they did surgery immediately to stop the torsion otherwise vital organs can fail.
I heard that all bloat needs to be handled by emergency surgery which we would have done with our dog Ralph but he has very bad heart disease and wouldn’t make it through surgery. We put him down very quickly at the emergency Vet after they gave him a bunch of pain medication. I have never heard of it correcting itself or a dog being sent home with bloat.
Why have they waited? It's usually over long before now. Her little belly is so swollen. I had 3 bloat and the only thing that saved them was catching it early. Hugs and prayers.
